God, Goddess, or Both? My Personal Story and Advice on Choosing the Energies You Invite Through Magick

My life has been touched by Magick from the beginning, before I was even aware of it. Around age 5, I would lie in my bed at night awaiting the "firework show". I would feel the air shift right before, and the darkness in my room would deepen, then slowly the glowing geometric shapes would begin to appear in my room. Green squares, red triangles, yellow circles, softly glowing with a light of their own. These visions didn't frighten me, they were just the beginnings of coming to "See" other worldly entities and spirits which continues to this day. As I grew older my Sight developed into seeing people that others did not, and in my 20's I finally began to wonder why, and that's when my search for answers really began. Growing up surrounded by the Church and Christian teachings did nothing to help in that search and in fact only caused issues with leaders when I would question them, pushing me further and further away from organized religion in general. As I am sure many of you have witnessed in your own lives, the patriarchy Is not forgiving of women with "gifts" that they cannot condone through their scriptures. My anger was strong about this, so the feeling of being treated unjustly fueled my desire and thirst to learn where my place was, and who I was as a woman and a spiritual being. This was before google lol, so I read many books, visited every metaphysical shop I could find, scoured libraries and finally found "Her".

One of my main problems with Christianity was the godhead, two men and a seemingly male holy ghost. Where was the Goddess? The "family" that we were taught to emulate didn't even have someone who our image might have been patterned from, and that made no sense to me. Sure there was Mary, but she had to be a virgin and the fact that even my sexuality could not be seen as holy was very bothersome to me.

For these reasons and endless others, many of us as women come to search for our Feminine Divinity. This is what led me to finally find my place as a sacred feminine being.

In my early practice my focus was that Feminine Divine because I was starved for it, and I think many women find themselves feeling the same.

Maybe you have a similar story. We all have our own journey and our own needs. Perhaps you need to empower your feminine energies, or maybe your life experience calls you to embrace the God and the divine male embrace. Choosing whether to honor the God, the Goddess, or both can feel like choosing a spiritual direction. Yet the choice is really about asking a clear question: What kind of sacred energy are you trying to build a relationship with right now?

In many traditions, deity is not limited to one fixed form. Some practitioners work with a Goddess, some with a God, some with both, and some with many deities or none at all. Your Magick can still be meaningful either way.

The choice begins with the energy you need

Ask yourself:

• What am I trying to grow, release, protect, or understand?

• Do I need softness, strength, passion, discipline, comfort, courage, or clarity?

• Am I seeking balance, or am I focusing on one specific energy?

• Do I feel called by a certain myth, symbol, season, animal, planet, or element?

  
  

Goddess energy often centers around creation, intuition, and cycles

Goddess energy is often linked with the mysteries of birth, death, renewal, intuition, the moon, the earth, water, the body, and emotional wisdom.

• Healing and self-trust

• Fertility, creativity, and growth

• Dreamwork and intuition

• Protection of home and family

• Grief, rest, and emotional release

• Cycles, endings, and new beginnings

  
  

The Goddess is not only gentle and nurturing. Many goddesses are fierce, sovereign, erotic, wild, strategic, or warlike. Think of figures such as Brigid, associated with healing, poetry, and the forge, or Hecate, linked with crossroads, spirits, and liminal places. The divine feminine can comfort, but it also challenges us.

God energy often centers around action, vitality, and direction

God energy is often linked with the sun, fire, the hunt, the forest, protection, sexuality, willpower, sacrifice, leadership, and forward movement.

• Passion, vitality, and desire

• Career, action, and motivation

• Discipline and personal power

• Contact with wilderness, animals, or the sun

  
  

The God is not only forceful or dominant. Gods can be tender, wise, playful, or deeply healing. Think of Apollo and his links to music, prophecy, and the sun, or Cernunnos and his ties to animals, fertility, and the wild.

I suggest you try to avoid reducing divine energy to stereotypes. Masculine and feminine are symbolic currents, not boxes for human identity. Anyone can work with either energy.

Many traditions honor both God and Goddess as sacred partners, polarities, or complementary forces. This does not mean every ritual must be perfectly balanced. Some seasons of life call for one energy more directly. Deity work is not just energy use. It is a relationship. If you do not feel called to a named deity, you can still work with broader sacred energies, such as the Divine Feminine, Divine Masculine, the Lord and Lady, the Great Mother, the Horned God, or the sacred balance between them.

The energy you invite through Magick can change as your life changes, I know mine has.

We are ever evolving as human and spiritual beings. Focus on the sacred presence that helps your Magick become more honest, focused, and vital to your life. Above all be introspective, honest, and clear minded about what you want in your life and what you need.

Magickal practice is the road to these discoveries for many of us, and our own path to being fully realized and empowered wonderful creatures is the goal! May you find all that you need and desire!
